About Grayzone Advisory
Geopolitical risk, explained by someone who's actually operated in it.
Most companies find out they had geopolitical exposure the same way most people find out they need insurance — right after something goes wrong. Grayzone Advisory exists to change that math, especially for the small and mid-sized businesses that never thought this kind of risk applied to them.
The Founder
Scott Kelly founded Grayzone Advisory after a career spent assessing risk under real conditions — first as a U.S. Army Special Forces officer, then in federal markets for non-traditional defense contractors operating at the intersection of emerging technology and national security as part of a revitalized defense industrial base.
That combination is why Grayzone exists. Most geopolitical risk advisory is written by people who've studied conflict — not operated inside it, or worked the federal and defense side of a regulated industry. Scott built Grayzone to bring that same ground-level judgment to companies that have never had access to it before.
Scott holds an Executive Master of International Service from American University and an MBA from Emory University. He's based in the Syracuse area.

Why Grayzone Exists
Large companies keep a geopolitical risk consultant on retainer. Small and mid-sized businesses usually don't — not because they're not exposed, but because no one ever built this kind of advisory for them. A sanctions list changes. A supplier goes dark. A shipping lane gets rerouted. For a company without a risk team, these events don't come with warning labels.
That gap is exactly where Grayzone works. We help business owners and leaders who are new to this kind of thinking — manufacturers being pulled into defense and semiconductor supply chains for the first time, companies with overseas suppliers or customers, and anyone whose business could be disrupted by a decision made thousands of miles away — understand their exposure in plain language, before it becomes a crisis.

Grayzone's insight is shaped by At the Water's Edge, a weekly podcast where Scott talks with practitioners, former officials, and academics about how conflicts and national power actually shape the world — insight most consulting engagements don't come with.
